In the cradle of the night, Shrouded from the hateful light. Touch of darkness on my skin. Smothering the glow within. Water for this inner fire. Silence to befall the choir. Shadows, teach me inner peace. Give me silence and release. Give me shade in which to sleep. Sow the seeds for me to reap. Keep my secrets in your care. In the sanctum of your lair. Soft and sacred, deep and dark. Wash away this shining mark. Leave me untouched by the Sun. Laid to rest where I've begun. In the embrace of the shade. By no light am I betrayed. Set no candle on this shrine. Nothing in the dark to shine.

A poor man's shoes upon my feet. These cobbled streets, my soles to meet. A thousand miles of field and stream. Caught in a dream, I walk unseen. To feel the touch of grass and stone Upon my bones, and I bemoan Those who walk on better shod Who on the sod, have never trod. Thusly clad they wander on. Where they've gone no Sun has shone. In dark defeat know no retreat. A poor man's shoes upon my feet.

We all live in terror of the beast beyond the door. Every flitting, silent, shadow moving over wall or floor. We close the bolts and drop the bar. As its shape blots out each star. We wish that we were ignorant of the beast beyond the door. All the city gates are closing and the fires stay lit at night. All the learned people gather to try to salvage what they might. Still we hear it clawing, Still the carrion birds are cawing. As they wait upon the feast left by the beast beyond the door. Every beam and timber shakes, every stone and window crumbles. Silently the creature stirs, and all around the walls it rumbles. As it searches out the weakness, As we cower in all our meekness, All afraid to meet our end before the beast beyond the door. What death awaits us all; we fear a beast without a face. In the face of the unknown we all fall into disgrace. With no light by which to steer, How do we begin to conquer fear?
